From the President's Desk
Assalamualaikum Wr Wb
All praises be to Allah, Lord of all Universe. Praises be to Prophet Muhammad saw, his family and his companions.
On behalf of the 5th Executive Commitee, welcome to the SIM Malay Cultural & Muslim Society's (SIMCMS) official website.
With the sheer determination, unwavering faith, and simply doing His deed with Ikhlas, i am proud to say that SIMCMS have made it past the 6 year mark, Alhamdulilah. Though, this was no surprise looking at the list of talented and skilled members, past and present, pushing it further forward.
Fundamentally, the Society's Modus Operandi lies in the concept of 'ilm, where we set an environment which accomodates the holistic acquisition of knowlegde through action and education.
We aim to promote the importance of marrying quality academic pursuits with spiritual excellence. We achieve this through promoting the practise of religious values into the daily lives of our Muslim students. In addition to that, our Society aims to highlight and further enrich the Malay Cultural experience within the campus, and beyond. Though i should stress that, activities held are not exclusively for Malay students for Islam does not segregates, it unites all races.
Another area of focus of SIMCMS, is the invoking the Entrepreneurial spirit within campus. Being in an established management school, this is what that makes us unique. With that allow me to highlight the success of our very first Islamic Economics Workshop/Islamic Gift Economy Model. It was our attempt in reating awareness in the Islamic approach to a Just and highly Ethical financial environment. It also allow students and aspiring academics to interact with reknowned experts, engaging in intellectual banters and discussions, slowly but surely realising this dream.
More of such events will follow suit, and we will constantly look towards the betterment of our members, students and insyaallah the community. All these will never come to fruition without your kind support and active participation. Do keep track of upcoming events coming your way throughout the year!! May Allah bless us all in our efforts to get closer to Him, insyaallah.
“One Heart, One Soul”
Wassalam.

Preparing for a New Semester
A Brand New Year, A Brand New Goal! Whether you are a first year student or a second year student on even doing your final year, there is always some lesson learned and ways to modify and improve your study style. Fret not, SIMCMS is here with you! When you are busy with back to back lectures and tutorials and at the same time managing a truckload of projects, - Always remember to make a list of tasks to complete. It makes the amount of work look less daunting when you can identify what needs to be done. Remember to make nice short list!
- Now your priority. You can prioritise your work and deal with the most urgent things first. Do what's important and what's urgent. Try to start with the most challenging ones. Because your mind is still fresh!
- Be efficient. You can switch to another task in the list when you need a break from a current one. Remember, Never Give Up!
- Visible progress. You get a sense of achievement when each task is completed and then struck it off the list.
When you are busy revising, you may come upon a time when you feel all stressed up. You get tired and ponder did you revised too little or did you overworked yourself. Let's me share with you on how to handle stress. - Review your goals and objectives. Are you trying to do too much in a short time?
- Check if you are setting too high a standard for yourself. If you have gone through an exam last year, reflect back on the amount of time allocated for study and create a a brand new goals. Do not pressure yourself if your score for previous exam was not what you had expected. Instead, work on your study skills.
- Identify the subjects that are stressful and rotate them with those that you like. Pick to study the subject you are weak in or least favorite first. You will be able to give full concentration to that subject when you are active.
- Look for a quiet place so that you would not need to fight distractions.
Do not study on bed --> You will tend to sleep. (very true!) Do not study at dining table --> You will tend to snack away. If you cannot sleep, then you may study on bed! :p - Study groups work for some people. Find a friend that takes the same paper as you and go through key points and encourage active discussions. You will find that half your doubts are cleared when you share your subject queries with someone.
- Finally, exercise regularly! It is a good way of relieving tension.
In the book What Makes a Champion!, Professor Allan Snyder FRS writes: "Champions are often familiar with adversity. The have had to 'fight' to get where they are... They learn how to convert...'upsets into set-ups'... Struggling in the early learning process possibly acclimatises us to difficulties, and may advantage us in dealing with adversity [later]."
psst: If you would like to find a friend who is taking the same module(s) as you so that perhaps can study together you can email me at simcms_asstsec@yahoo.com ! SIMCMS wishes all freshies, seniors and all students in SIM, a best of luck for a new year and may this year be a head-start to find new friends and setting of new goals. May your study at SIM be fruitful and equip with knowledge and opportunities. Insya-Allah. Amin.

Introduction to SIMCMS
SIM Malay Cultural & Muslim Society (SIMCMS) celebrates its 4th anniversary, after being established in July 2007!
We are currently serving the 5th Executive Committee 11/12.
A full-time proposed student club, SIMCMS is a voluntary organization, which serves to cater to all Malay and Muslim students in SIM. However, the activities we conduct are not catered exclusively for Malays,
for Islam is not a religion which segregates races. Our activities are carefully planned so as to integrate Cultural, Islamic and Entrepreneurship elements.
Also, being a school where holistic education takes the centre stage, we understand the importance of having a balanced lifestyle.
Hence, we believe in having recreational activities as part of our calendar of events. One of our primary objectives is to develop judicious individuals; hence, a holistic development of mind and body
is necessary to achieve the abovementioned objective.
